About Stephen

A resident of Bishop for over a decade, I moved to the area for a job as a "rocket scientist" (astronomer) at the "Big Ears" (officially the Owens Valley Radio Observatory). Like any sensible person, I prompty fell in love with the area, and most importantly, the wonderful community in Bishop.

A few years back the observatory underwent massive personnel changes and I was faced with a decision to leave the valley (and follow my career of 10+ years) or pursue a different career that would allow me to keep living here. I adapted, re-casting my skillset to take advantage of remote employment opportunities that infrastructure advances like the Digital 395 project have now made possible.

In the past 10 years alone, I have seen Bishop change dramatically, and there's no denying we have struggled to quickly adapt to our modern world. We all know that ensuring a prosperous and sustainable economy for Bishop is a long road, and is one of the biggest challenges facing us in the coming years -- but a challenge that my experiences have prepared me to tackle.

As a scientist and engineer, I have been trained to be a problem solver: capable of identifying the information that is relevant to issues, and coming up with the efficient and pragmatic solutions. My training also taught me to learn from what has and has not worked in the past, and use that as a foundation when tackling novel problems. My life experience has taught me to be agile and adapt to the modern world, a skill that is extremely relevant to the problems Bishop faces today. I would apply these skills to decisions facing the Council, and promise to approach the job guided always by empathy, compassion, and reason.

The challenges we face are complex, but I'm confident that together we can meet them. With your support (and your input), as your council member I will work hard to build comprehensive and intelligent solutions that ensure a bright economic future for Bishop.
